History of North Hempstead Country Club

In 1916, the North Hempstead Country Club, located in Port Washington, New York, was founded as a golf club. The original golf course immediately captured the attention of residents and golf aficionados, with the demanding and inspired path of its 100 sprawling, rolling acres conceived by one of the most famous golf course architects in history, A.W. Tillinghast.

In 1956, some of the club’s leased land was returned to a sand mining operation, located at the east end. This required a redesign and reimagining of the 11th, 12th, 13th, 16th and 17th holes. This was accomplished with the help of another famous course architect, Robert Trent Jones. Then, in 1994, North Hempstead brought in golf course architect Gil Hanse, who was challenged to develop a master plan that restored the course to the original Tillinghast design. This was completed in the spring of 1996.

The course at North Hempstead is meticulously well maintained, and focuses soundly on accuracy and position. Its holes are beautifully carved into the landscape, with pristine greens, fantastic hazards and well-placed traps. Hours melt away as you take in the astounding view and relax with good friends. The magnificence of the course is why the membership never tires of challenging the layout.

North Hempstead’s large swimming pool complex was built in 1958. The L-shaped pool and diving areas are huge, allowing for a total capacity of 288,000 gallons and providing ample space for swimming, games and contests. Heated, the pool is open every day of its normal season, Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Not to be outdone, the club’s three tennis courts boast the perfect Har Tru surface, the choice of players worldwide. The courts are open to all regular and tennis members from spring to fall, and the North Hempstead’s tennis professional is on hand during these times to give lessons and coordinate a variety of events.

The Main Clubhouse, situated at the end of the entrance drive, reveals a stately view that only a structure built more than 70 years ago can provide. The original building, kept in unspoiled condition, is now used as the entrance foyer and main lounge for the clubhouse. The Main Bar, Grill Room and The Ladies Card Room all have high-beamed ceilings, exuding classic charm and providing a spectacular feel of airiness. Both the men’s and women’s locker rooms have recently been updated and now feature adjacent lounge facilities. The men’s locker room also benefits Members by containing a full-size gym for Members’ use.

The beautiful main Terrace Dining Room is an area of great pride for the facility. Built in 1966 over what had been a large outdoor patio and dining area, the room has a glassed-in rotunda with an all-encompassing view of the putting green (one of the largest on Long Island) as well as the course’s 18th hole. Depending on the type of function being considered, the Terrace Dining Room can easily and comfortably accommodate more than 300 people at a single seating.

North Hempstead Country Club has a roster of more than 500 Members of various classifications, based on how they use the Club. Managed by a Board of Governors and Officers elected by regular Members, it has a highly skilled staff that is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Club and its varied facilities. There are also staff professionals that specialize in a variety of special areas. Many of the staff are under the direct supervision of Board Committees, groups consisting of Members who devote considerable time to facilitating a truly remarkable, unforgettable experience for Members and guests.
